News Of An Entry Level Audi R8 V6 Is False

Some will be saddened by the looming end of an icon as Audi is rumored to have no current plans for a direct replacement of the R8 past the current generation. But before saying its final goodbyes, an entry-level variant powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine was rumored to be released.

Originally speculated to debut at the New York motor show late next week, this variant would have been the first non-V10 R8 since the model was first released. Speculated to feature an engine already found in the Porsche Panamera, Audi RS4, and Audi RS5, it’s capable of delivering 450 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.

But an Audi spokesperson has told Road & Track that there is no V6 planned for the R8, which means the 540-hp R8 V10 is still the entry-level variant for Audi's mid-engine supercar. A shame really, because a more affordable R8 trim could have made the car more appealing to potential customers, especially if it were to have rear-wheel drive. The lighter body weight and less power would have made the R8 V6 a hoot to drive.

We’ll just have to keep waiting for Audi to produce something that is both fun and affordable, perhaps something that features a R6 badge.

I don't know why Audi wouldn't look into offering a lower level entry point for the R8 considering their declining sales. Seems like a no brainer to reduce its powertrain in an effort to bring costs down. There were rumours of a new model debuting at the New York Auto Show, but I think those have been proven to be false as well.

I think this is a mistake from Audi. The R8 could have seen more successful sales with a lower entry price. Now it looks like we'll have to wait on a more conventional model, which *fingers crossed* is the R6.

The R8 was and is a beautiful vehicle and I'll be sad to see such a model get cancelled. OF course sales are going to be low, but I guess Audi is tired of having other models pick up the profit slack. Let's hope they come out with a replacement or the R6.
